About Conference

Organisers

The conference is jointly organised by Masaryk University and the non-profit organisation Společně, o.p.s., creating a unique partnership that blends scientific expertise with historical heritage. In its role as the academic guarantor, Masaryk University provides cutting-edge insights into genetics, presenting the latest scientific advances. Společně, o.p.s. ensures that this international scientific dialogue remains firmly rooted in Brno—the very birthplace of genetics—while actively promoting and preserving the revolutionary legacy of Gregor Johann Mendel. This bond between academic excellence and the stewardship of cultural and scientific wealth enables not only the sharing of data but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of researchers.

Welcome to Brno

Welcome to Brno—the vibrant heart of South Moravia and the global cradle of genetics! Brno is a city that breathes discovery, seamlessly blending its deep scientific roots with a bold, forward-looking spirit. As the second-largest city in the Czech Republic and its intellectual engine, Brno offers a unique atmosphere where history and high-tech innovation meet.

The story began behind the walls of the Augustinian Abbey in Old Brno. It was in this very monastery garden that Gregor Johann Mendel decoded the laws of heredity, changing the course of biology forever. Today, you can walk in his footsteps at the Mendel Museum of Masaryk University, located directly within the Abbey, which preserves his extraordinary legacy. For a deeper dive into the world of genetics, the Mendelianum—a world-class interactive centre under the Moravian Museum—offers a fascinating bridge between Mendel’s historical research and modern molecular biology.

Brno’s status as a “City of Science” is driven by its prestigious universities. The city is a thriving hub of knowledge, home to Masaryk University or Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU), which proudly bears the founder’s name and continues his work in life sciences and agriculture. Together with the Brno University of Technology and the Veterinary University Brno, these institutions foster a young, innovative community that keeps Brno at the forefront of global research.

The historic centre is a treasure trove of sights, from the Gothic grandeur of the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul to the imposing Špilberk Castle. Innovation isn’t just found in our labs—it is etched into our architecture, most notably in the UNESCO-listed Villa Tugendhat.

Whether you are drawn here by top-tier genetic research, the legendary hospitality, or the world-renowned wines of South Moravia, Brno invites you to experience a city that celebrates both the brilliance of the mind and the joy of life.
