It is with great pleasure and a profound sense of honor that we announce that Professor Carol W. Greider, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, has accepted our invitation to Mendel Genetics Conference 2027. One of the most distinguished figures in contemporary molecular biology will thus join the leading scientists from around the world who will gather in Brno on 22–23 July 2027!
Carol Greider is Professor of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She made scientific history in 1984 when, as a graduate student working with Elizabeth Blackburn, she discovered the enzyme telomerase. This groundbreaking discovery helped explain how the ends of chromosomes, known as telomeres, are protected and how cells maintain their genetic information during cell division.
For this groundbreaking discovery, Carol Greider and her colleagues were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009. Their research opened new avenues for understanding cellular aging, the development of cancer, and certain inherited diseases.
Professor Greider continues to pursue research in these areas. Her current work focuses on the links between telomere length, cellular aging, cancer, and inherited disorders associated with telomere dysfunction, including bone marrow failure.
Carol Greider’s participation represents an exceptional highlight of Mendel Genetics Conference 2027. It is a great honor for us to welcome to Brno a scientist whose work has profoundly influenced modern genetics and medicine. Her presence will also symbolically connect the legacy of Gregor Johann Mendel with some of the most important discoveries in contemporary science.
We look forward to her lecture and to an inspiring gathering of the scientific community in Brno.
